- But, as you've noticed, many other times the band is dead...but

- There were variations in the designs back then, and you could

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu

- USENET friends -- we're seeking your help...
-
- Radio astromomers, both professional and amateur, have been
- monitoring radio emissions from Jupiter during the recent
- cometary impacts. Jupiter is a well-studied high-frequency
- radio source, with a variety of signal types usually around 20-MHz.
- Many researchers have reported interesting changes in the
- noise patterns, perhaps related to the Shoemaker-Levy comet
- fragments and their interactions with the magnetic field of
- Jupiter and its moon, Io.
-
- Several astronomers have also reported some rather bizarre
- signals present on the tapes made during the collision of
- Fragments E, P, and K. After digital signal processing, while
- listening to the audio on headphones, one can hear through the
- noise bursts the sound of a human voice. In the hopes that
- someone on the net will be able to assist in the identification
- of this signal, I'm posting a transcript of the words that can
- be made out. Note that unintelligible segments are marked --??--.

- Almost any SWL (shortwave) receiver will pick up WWV. There are a lot of
- shortwave sets available for under $100. which are pretty poor performers
- for SWL listening, but which will work quite well for WWV/WWVH.
-
- Probably the easiest one to locate is sold by DAK. It's audio performance
- is poor and it's weak-signal sensitivity is abysmal, but it gets excellent
- reception of WWV. (Remember that WWV transmits on 4 or 5 frequencies which
- each work better at fidderent times of the day.)

- Hmmmm....
-
- Lots of people seem to be saying to just buy any SW and that will do.
-
- I as well thought that would be the case.
-
- Has anybody tried to do this lately?
-
- I actually went with Aaron to a few stores, including Radio Shack, and
- was completely suprised to find out that for some reason new SW sets
- have bands that conveniently begin and end with gaps just before and
- after 5, 10, 15, and 20MHz. It's as if someone is saying we don't want
- you picking up on these frequencies.
-
- I personally am a self stiled pesimist and think it's the big
- corporations saying: OOo. look at these special frequencies. Lets
- try to bleed the public dry for receivers that will pick them up.
